Company History

Inmagic has a rich corporate history that spans more than two decades as a pioneer in information management.

'Inmagic' ("information magic") the product was born. Founded by Betty Eddison, an early pioneer in library science, and technologist Karen Brothers from MIT, Inmagic quickly became recognized as a pioneer in the application of software technology to the area of library and management. With Karen's appointment as President in 1984, the company was also one of the first technology companies to be led by a woman.

After a highly successful launch of our first DOS-based product in the US, Inmagic established distribution in Canada, Australia, South Africa and the UK, beginning its global expansion.

Phillip Green was appointed as Inmagic's CEO, enabling Karen Brothers to focus her attention on technology, moving the company to Windows and planning the company's future technical direction.

Betty Eddison's continued contributions to the library community were recognized and she was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Special Library Association.

Inmagic released DB/TextWorks, a Windows replacement for Inmagic's DOS product line.

Mid-1990s: Inmagic released DB/Text WebPublisher PRO - one of the earliest products on the market that enabled publishing from databases to the Web. WebPub (as it became known) provided unprecedented access to the data stored in Inmagic databases. The company grew rapidly and quickly became the market leader Special Libraries. The number of organizations using our Windows-based tools grew well into the thousands.

With the release of WebPub, Inmagic again was well ahead of its competition. WebPub sales were especially brisk in the corporate library marketplace where intranets were now being built; in fact, Inmagic was the first database application on many intranets.

Inmagic added European distribution partners in France and Italy.

Inmagic shipped Inmagic® Content Server, providing clients with a version of TextWorks and WebPublisher PRO that featured an MS SQL Server back end. This release was prompted by IT's growing demand for a standard SQL based backend.

Inmagic released Inmagic® Genie, a Web-based integrated library system (ILS) built on the Content Server platform. In contrast to competing products which are sold as individual modules, Genie is a comprehensive (all modules included) and truly integrated library system.

Inmagic sold its 100th Genie ILS, and released Inmagic® Presto. Presto is a Web-based enterprise application designed for organizations where managing multiple collections of information assets in diverse formats and locations is of strategic importance. Presto customers typically are information-intensive organizations whose high-value and dynamic content needs to be centrally managed and made available to a wide audience 24/7. Presto's enterprise-scale architecture is based on SQL and .NET, for easy integration into Microsoft environments.

After successfully running Inmagic for 16 years, Phillip Green asked Paul Puzzanghera, Inmagic's VP Professional Services over the previous three years, to become Inmagic's CEO. Phil moved into the role of product visionary and managing director of our now thriving Library business.

Inmagic released versions 2.0 and 2.1 of Presto with powerful new capabilities to support user alerting, RSS support and more. Underscoring our continued leadership in the special library market Inmagic announced our 200th Genie ILS and was prominently featured on the cover of SLA's Information Outlook magazine. Closing the year, Inmagic announced a five million dollar investment in the company by The Edison Venture Fund. This investment positions Inmagic well for great success well into the future and is being used to expand product development, support, marketing and sales.
