    Spring is in the Air!

    The sun is shining, birds are singing, and the flowers and software updates are blooming – all positive signs that a long, stormy winter is behind us, and spring has arrived. Just as in nature, Inmagic has been busy preparing for the spring, and we are looking forward to a number of exciting events planned for the next few months.

    Following the release of DB/TextWorks v14 and Presto v4.1, our development staff has been working on the DB/TextWorks for SQL and WebPublisher PRO v14 releases (slated for late spring), as well as Genie v3.6. The team is also busy finalizing the Presto v4.2 release, including exciting new search capabilities. We believe this new search mechanism will greatly benefit our Presto and Presto for DB/TextWorks customers, and we look forward to sharing more details in our next product roadmap webinar, scheduled for May 21st.

    In addition to our busy development schedule, the Inmagic sales and marketing team has been gearing up for the trade show season, and has just returned from the Computers in Libraries (CIL) 2013 show in Washington, DC. As part of the SydneyPLUS family of companies – Inmagic, SydneyPLUS, Cuadra and Lookup Precision – we're a force to be reckoned with in our exhibit space. Our next major show is the Special Libraries Association event, SLA 2013, in San Diego, June 9th-11th. If we didn't have a chance to see you and say hello at CIL, we hope to see you in San Diego either at our booth – #317 – or at our cocktail hour. And lastly, we would like to extend a special thank you to Marie Tretiakova from the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) for participating in our Customer Spotlight. We congratulate her and her team on their successful Inmagic Presto for Social Libraries deployment. CCL was introduced to Inmagic by authorized Inmagic partner Ann Stringfield of InfoCrofters, who has been an integral part of CCL's success with Inmagic products for many years.

    If you have questions about any of the items below, we encourage you to contact us directly – give us a call at 781-938-4444, extension 2 or send us a message at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We look forward to hearing from you.

    SNEAK PEEK AT PRESTO v4.2

    The release of Presto v4.2 is right around the corner. Here's a quick preview of some of the great new features:

    • Support for IE 10
    • Guided navigation (aka, faceted search)
    • Permissive dates
    • Updates to homepages

    Guided navigation (aka, faceted search)
    Search results now include guided navigation controls that allow users to quickly and easily narrow their search using multiple filters. Amazon and most e-commerce sites have guided navigation – and now, so does Presto! Here is an example of what guided navigation might look like in Presto:

    Administrators get to choose which fields appear in guided navigation, and they can set the order of the fields displayed. We recommend using fields with value lists (validation lists/authority control) in guided navigation, as these fields are well-organized and well-structured, and allow users to efficiently and accurately narrow their search results. For text-like fields (e.g., subject, media type, category), check boxes next to each field value allow users to select multiple values to include in the results. For date and number fields, users check boxes to specify a range (beginning and ending values), and date fields support a calendar control as shown in the screenshot.

    Permissive dates
    In the past, Presto supported one type of date – a SQL date. This format is very unforgiving and precise, and presented a problem for our DB/TextWorks clients who are accustomed to date fields that are much more flexible. Now Presto includes "permissive dates," providing support for dates with characteristics such as:

    • Partial dates ([c1992], Jul-2012)
    • Seasons (spring 2012)
    • Formats such as May/June 2013
    • No date at all

    Searching in permissive date fields works the same way as it does in DB/TextWorks. For example: "1996" retrieves all dates in 1996, and "March 1996" retrieves all dates in March 1996. And users can search for text anywhere in the field. Best of all, existing text fields can be changed to use the permissive date data type for users who imported their date information into text fields in previous versions of Presto (e.g., to preserve formatting or trailing text, or because the dates were not valid SQL dates).

    Homepages
    An alternative homepage designer is now available. (The current homepage designer remains in place and is still functional, so there is no conversion required with this upgrade.) The new homepage designer includes the following enhancements:

    • The screen layout or template can now be different for each homepage, is completely flexible, and is designed through the user interface.
    • The styles (CSS) are completely adaptable and specified through the user interface.
    • Controls or widgets can be copied and shared/linked across homepages. For example, you can have an HTML widget showing "announcements" that is common to all homepages. When you edit a linked widget, all copies of the widget on all homepages are updated.
    • You can design the new homepages while clients continue to use the existing Web Part homepages. (Note: the old homepages used Web Parts, and the new homepage uses HTML widgets for much greater flexibility and control.)

    With the new homepages, we now support multiple homepages per user. This allows the administrator to create several homepages (each with a specific purpose, such as "announcements") and permits the users to switch to a different homepage when desired.

    CUSTOMER FEATURE: CENTER FOR CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

    About the Center for Creative Leadership
    For more than 40 years, the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) has been providing executive leadership education and research to clients around the globe. CCL annually serves more than 20,000 individuals and 2,000 organizations – including more than 80 of the Fortune 100 companies – across the public, private, nonprofit and education sectors. In addition, they have provided information to nearly two million people through CCL publications.

    The Problem
    Over the course of 40+ years, CCL has amassed an impressive collection of leadership-related articles, instructional aids, videos, books and other information that is used primarily by its staff to create topic-specific, customized classes worldwide, as well as by the public and current/past clients. Though CCL has long managed its collection on Inmagic's DB/TextWorks, there was no way to share or provide that information electronically to the 600 staff members and past/present clients spread out across 120 countries on six continents. Information was stored in different locations, or "rabbit holes" of knowledge, that had become increasingly difficult to keep track of. And information was only accessible to CCL users when staff members were available to access the library, find the information, and send it.

    The Solution
    In order to catalog and consolidate their institutional knowledge and intellectual assets, and make information easily accessible throughout the organization, CCL implemented a Presto for Social Libraries solution incorporating Inmagic Presto for search and retrieval and Inmagic Genie for administration of the CCL knowledge catalog and library infrastructure.

    The Results
    Users are now able to access information stored anywhere, at any time, from any location across the globe, electronically. In addition, CCL was able to use Presto to tag each piece of information to form a collection of competencies. They now have more than 400 competencies within the collection, so that if a user wants information related to "self-awareness," for example, the user simply executes a single search using the term and all materials – books, movies, articles, etc. – related to that competency are located.

    In addition, CCL's catalog of more than 9,000 books and movies is now browsable and the materials are available for loan to clients and the public when they visit the CCL campuses. CCL is also planning to use Presto's social functions to facilitate communication and collaboration within groups, as well as across functions.

    "The reaction from our users has been overwhelmingly positive. One user said that the ease-of-use and accessibility almost brought tears to her eyes! Though we value our IT people, we're happy to be able to service ourselves."
    Marie Tretiakova, Knowledge Management Librarian

    Congratulations, CCL! And special thanks to Inmagic partner Ann Stringfield of InfoCrofters for introducing Inmagic to CCL and facilitating the partnership.

    Tips and Tricks

    Our tech team is always willing to help. And in this issue, they've put together a few great tips for getting the most out of WebPublisher PRO.

    To use a customized iwpp-edit.asp page in WebPublisher PRO, rather than the default iwpp-edit.asp: add code, such as what's written below, to an include (in seam 4, for instance) or a "raw html" form box at the bottom of an edit form:

    <script type="text/javascript">
    var theForm = document.forms["edit_form"];
    theForm.action = "/dbtw-wpd/ASP/iwpp-customized-edit.asp";
    theForm.method = "POST";
    </script>

    This allows you to make all kinds of changes to your customized ASP page without touching – or breaking – the installed (default) ASP page.

    If you would like to auto-refresh a WebPublisher PRO single record display to a particular edit form (or to any URL for that matter) without adding to the client's browser history (i.e., prevent unwanted back button use) use code such as what you see below:

    In the example above, x (as in: <span id="EditLink">x</span>) is an "Edit Record link." The JavaScript pulls out the target URL from the link and auto-refreshes to the edit page.
