Industry Trends:
As industry trends evolve, so do the terms and acronyms that accompany them. As Inmagic strives to lead the industry in helping organizations manage their research information assets, we thought you might like some clarification of the terms currently being used to describe different content management styles and solutions.
Research Asset Management
RAM combines straightforward search and reporting functionality for end users with sophisticated information structuring, metadata management and presentation tools. RAM focuses on several areas, including:
- Publishing finished content
- Inmagic improves access to information by providing three ways to find information: Search, Browsable Directories, and Alerts).
- Consolidating information and reducing information silos
- Inmagic manages heterogeneous information in a robust manner. Each type of content (documents, images, URLs, news, etc.), can have its own metatagging scheme and each can be formatted differently (images can be thumbnailed, news can be treated as an RSS feed, etc.)
- Providing a central mechanism to find internal and external resources
- A search using Inmagic can include internally managed information as well as external subscription databases (Nexis, etc.) or deep Web information (Pubmed, etc.)
Enterprise Content Management
ECM systems focus on building a Web site (a static set of HTML pages), while providing a workflow approval mechanism for the pages prior to being publishing. ECM systems tend to be large scale repositories of many types of content held across the entirety of an organization. As well as digital media, nearly all material (including operational documents and files) may be included in the scope of an ECM implementation.
Document Management
DM systems focus on capturing documents and ensuring that they cannot be lost, while providing a revision management workflow during document creation. DM systems generally include a database system to organize stored documents and a search mechanism to quickly find specific documents.
Digital Asset Management
DAM systems focus on providing robust image management and handling. It is a collective term applied to the process of storing, cataloging, searching and delivering computer files (“digital assets”). These may take the form of video, audio, images, print marketing collateral, office documents, fonts or 3D models.

Tips & Tricks:
From the Knowledgebase:
Genie Foundation (Single-User version) is a cost-effective implementation of the Genie product that allows one professional (Admin, Cataloger or Staff) user and an unlimited number of OPAC (Public) users to access the software.
In Genie Foundation, if a user logs in with a professional user name and password to access My Genie, they count as the only allowed professional user. To get the most use out of your professional login (Admin, Cataloger or Staff), library personnel should be given two logins:
- one with the public role for use as a patron and for My Genie
- one with an Admin, Cataloger or Staff role for use as the designated library professional.
They can then log in as a patron when they wish to review their personal profiles using My Genie.
For example, if a part time student works in the library as a staff member during the day, but at night wishes to access My Genie as a student, then the student should have two logins — one for when they are a student, and one for when they are working in the library.

Learn about best practices in research asset management
More than ever... your organization's success depends on quickly finding and acting on various kinds of research assets: the high-value internal and external information that professionals at all levels use to gain insights, plan, and execute.
However, based on Inmagic's conversations with hundreds of organizations in a variety of industries, the management of internal and external research assets remains challenging for most organizations — including sizable organizations with otherwise sophisticated capabilities.
How do the "best practice" organizations manage their research assets?
How can your information center be an invaluable resource across the organization (and beyond, if you serve external audiences as well)?
Through our work with numerous organizations, we've identified best practices for research asset management — a critical competency in today's information-driven economy where nearly everyone is a "researcher" in some way. As an information professional, you need to not only find information on behalf of end users but also make their own research efforts more productive. For over two decades Inmagic has provided the tools and applications that enable information professionals to build information repositories and make their organizations' research assets easily accessible by end users.
Join us to hear about seven best practices in research asset management. We'll also discuss return on investment (ROI): how those best practices organizations (and especially those who lead them) gauge the impact of effective research asset management.
