Product News:

Inmagic Passes 200th Genie Milestone

GenieInmagic has sold its 200th Inmagic® Genie ILS, adding to a rich and diverse set of customer organizations worldwide including Dreyfus, Holland & Knight, Bureau Veritas, Jones & Stokes, Shughart Thomson & Kilroy, and the California Child Welfare Resource Library.

Many librarians we speak to have found the volume of information they need to manage keeps increasing, and Genie is a tool that can help streamline their management of information. Sue Feldman, IDC's Vice President for Content Technologies, notes: " Genie's librarian's dashboard and other automation tools enable information center staff to maximize the time that they spend using their professional expertise on behalf of end users, versus handling administrative tasks like serials check-in and labeling."

Read the press release for insights on why more than 200 organizations have chosen Genie.

"Taming Infoclutter"

Industry watcher Jennifer Koerber, "the Eclectic Librarian", will be giving a 15-minute Cybertour at the Internet Librarian conference entitled "Taming the Online Infoclutter: Using RSS to Keep Current and Manage Overload".

Here's the main idea: since online publishing of good information has been expanding tremendously, keeping track of it can be difficult to say the least. But many online news and information sources now publish RSS feeds. Koerber states, "RSS feeds allow you to subscribe to the latest posts and articles from a variety of sources, bringing the information to you rather than you having to go find it. You can use a feed reader... to collect and organize your various feeds... just like an individualized newspaper." She then presents tips for choosing, using and organizing the feeds in a system that works best for your needs and workflow.

See details on Koerber's presentation, Wednesday Oct 31st

To take your information aggregation environment to the next level, Inmagic offers the benefits of improved RSS capability in Presto v2.1, which now accommodates all best-of-breed RSS readers. In Presto, RSS capability enables users to receive alerts on topics that they wish to monitor - and all Alert types can now be scheduled.

Tips & Tricks:

Inmagic® Genie: Add a validation list to the Publisher field on the Edit Order page: New Browse link will show Publishers on the validation list in the CATALOG textbase

From Lisa in QA:
To avoid typographical errors in Publisher names, you may want to add a [Browse] link to the Publisher box on the Edit Order page. To do so, in MyEditScreens.config, in the orders_item_edit screen, change this line:

<Field Name="OrdCatPublisher" Type="TextBox" CssClass="orders_edit_textinput_minus6" ShowBrowse="false" Required="false" Align="left"/>

To this line (which creates a [Browse] link that will display the validation list from the CatPublisher field in the CATALOG textbase):

<Field Name="OrdCatPublisher" Type="TextBox" CssClass="orders_edit_textinput_minus6" ShowBrowse="true" BrowseTN="Catalog" BrowseField="CatPublisher" Required="false" Align="left"/>

Remember to restart IIS or the World Wide Webpublishing Service using the Services window after making this change.

Note that BrowseType= defaults to VALIDATION_LIST, so the example above omits it. The line below is equivalent.

<Field Name="OrdCatPublisher" Type="TextBox" CssClass="orders_edit_textinput_minus6" ShowBrowse="true" BrowseType="VALIDATION_LIST" BrowseTN="Catalog" BrowseField="CatPublisher" Required="false" Align="left"/>

stampWith nearly 44,000+ members in more than 110 countries, the American Philatelic Society (APS) is the largest, nonprofit society in the world for stamp collectors. Museums Australia award winners

Museums Australia rewards its members for achieving excellence in a variety of activities. With so many of the Victorian Branch members using Inmagic software to manage their collections, it is not surprising that many of them appear in the list of winners. Recent stars include:

  • Melbourne's Living Museum of the West: Pobblebonk Exhibition won the "Organisations: Staff of one to six persons" prize. The exhibition promotes the idea that communities are responsible for their own environment. Flora and fauna of the Maribyrnong River were featured.
  • Yackandandah and District Historical Society: Won the "Organisations: Wholly volunteer run" award for its Fire Recovery Program. This program enabled the Society to make a comeback after a devastating fire destroyed part of its building.
  • Bruce Baxter of the Pioneer Settlement Museum, Swan Hill, gained the "Individuals: Outstanding achievement" award for his commitment to teaching Koorie culture in programs for visitors to the Museum and in school communities.

Library Awards:

  • Sherrey Quinn has been awarded the distinction of Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association for her "contribution to special library service provision, to improved access to information, to the wider awareness of the LIS sector in Australia and for her service to ALIA".

    Congratulations to Sherrey, who made extensive use of Inmagic software in various roles in Melbourne and while providing consultancy services through Online Information Services Pty Ltd (1986-1995). During the early to mid 1990s, Sherrey documented the development of Australia's online industry and its developing databases. Her published work in this period includes the Directory of Australian and New Zealand Databases and the Recipe Book Service of Online Searching (8th to 4th editions). As a founding member of Libraries Alive! Based in Canberra, Sherrey continues to use and recommend Inmagic software where appropriate.
  • Another Inmagic user was honored with a prestigious international award announced in June. Stephen Due, the chief librarian at Geelong Hospital (Barwon Health), has been named the 2007 Information Professional of the Year by the SLA Australia/New Zealand Chapter. Amongst his many and varied professional activities, Stephen is a regular face at the local Maxus Technical Workshops. He is a hard-working and enthusiastic information specialist who does his utmost to impart his knowledge and skills. Marie McKenzie, the past president of the SLA Australia/New Zealand Chapter, has stated that Stephen "has gone above and beyond to share his expertise and knowledge with his colleagues and peers".

Learn about best practices in research asset management

More than ever... your organization's success depends on quickly finding and acting on various kinds of research assets: the high-value internal and external information that professionals at all levels use to gain insights, plan, and execute.

However, based on Inmagic's conversations with hundreds of organizations in a variety of industries, the management of internal and external research assets remains challenging for most organizations — including sizable organizations with otherwise sophisticated capabilities.

How do the "best practice" organizations manage their research assets?

How can your information center be an invaluable resource across the organization (and beyond, if you serve external audiences as well)?

Through our work with numerous organizations, we've identified best practices for research asset management — a critical competency in today's information-driven economy where nearly everyone is a "researcher" in some way.  As an information professional, you need to not only find information on behalf of end users but also make their own research efforts more productive.  For over two decades Inmagic has provided the tools and applications that enable information professionals to build information repositories and make their organizations' research assets easily accessible by end users.

Join us to hear about seven best practices in research asset management. We'll also discuss return on investment (ROI): how those best practices organizations (and especially those who lead them) gauge the impact of effective research asset management.
