arrow President's Message

The economic news has been pretty grim for the past few weeks. Credit markets are failing; liquidity is non-existent; major financial institutions are falling apart. While we all hope that the situation will stabilize, we can certainly expect to see an impact in all our organizations. Most assuredly it will mean that we will have to do more with less – our challenge and our opportunity as information professionals.

The only way to have fewer people do more in information-based organizations is to increase commitment to Knowledge Management initiatives. Knowledge Management and specifically Social Knowledge Networks allow organizations to preserve the knowledge of displaced staff, accelerate communication between far flung teams pressed to do more, and centralize information to eliminate redundancy and streamline business processes. So, despite the jittery economy, Inmagic is optimistic about our growth and opportunities in the coming year. We will continue our commitment to helping you ease the burden on your overcommitted resources by developing powerful tools that improve your organizational productivity.

We’ll be rolling out a new and exciting version of Inmagic® Presto, the industry’s first true Social Knowledge Management Platform. We will also release new packaging and pricing for our popular Inmagic® Genie ILS to leverage your investments in WebPublisher Pro and DB/Text products. This issue of @Inmagic is focused on all the exciting happenings from Inmagic, our customers and our market. I encourage all of you to keep an eye on our Web site and blog, and to set up a Google Alert (http://www.google.com/alerts) for Inmagic, so you can keep up with Inmagic news and the discussions that relate to your Knowledge Management needs.

As we continue to invest in what some are calling “the new Inmagic” our core mission has you, our customers and constituents, at the center of all we do. I hope all of you have started to see the fruit of our recent investments (we've increased our staffing by nearly 30% this year so far) and share our excitement about the future. As you plan for 2009, know that we are committed to your success. We will continue to invest in our products and services while at the same time providing you with cost-effective solutions that meet the challenges of today's volatile economic climate.

From the entire team here at Inmagic, and our network of value-added partners around the world, “thank you for your continued support.” I hope you enjoy this issue of @Inmagic.

DB/TextWorks Date Format

Senior Support Engineer Mike Segur offers some advice regarding the date format in DB/TextWorks:

"I created a record using a date in the following format: 07/25/2008. The index, however, shows 2008-Jul-25, and when I use F4 to paste today's date entry into a query screen, it also shows 2008-Jul-25."

Why does this happen? Well, the index in the Query Choices Browser (and thus F4 on the query screen) by default shows YYYY-MMMM-DD for dates so that searches will work properly. If F4 on the query screen did 07/25/08, your search would retrieve all records in 2007 OR 2025 OR 2008 -- presumably not what you intended.

You can change the format in the index by means of the parameter IndexDateFmt= in the DBText.ini file (or Inmcsrv.ini if you are using Content Server rather than DB/TextWorks).

"Beyond 2.0: User-Focused Tools & Practices"
October 20 - 22, 2008
Monterey Conference Center, Monterey, CA

Web 2.0 and social media were the buzz at this year's Internet Librarian conference. Presenters and attendees from special, public and academic libraries around the world shared views and experiences on making new technologies work in libraries to create communities, increase participation, and to improve knowledge sharing and discovery. Some sought social media and web 2.0 to recruit and retain younger employees. It was a really interesting mix of people and ideas, and we had a lot of great conversations at the booth. Check out our blog for pictures and comments from the show!
